Our Services

While our therapists work with clients who come to us with a variety of concerns, select therapists offer unique specialties. Several of these specialties are highlighted here.

Gender-Affirming Care

We know that finding affirming care can be a challenge for LGBTQ+ individuals. That's precisely why we are here...Capital Connections Counseling is a unique practice dedicated to providing affirming care to members of marginalized groups, including those belonging to LGBTQIA+ communities. We are here to support you in your journey to discovering and living as your authentic self.

Our clinicians have specific education, training, and experience working with LGBTQ+ individuals, including those who are questioning or just beginning to explore these aspects of themselves. In our practice, we provide therapy to children, adolescents, and adults. We welcome the opportunity to work with couples and families to help provide comprehensive support to the family system.

As members of WPATH (World Professional Association for Transgender Health) we follow a model of comprehensive and affirming care to trans and gender-diverse individuals and their loved ones based on the most recent version of the Standards of Care. In addition to therapy, we also provide evaluations and referrals for gender-affirming medical treatment and procedures including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and a variety of surgical procedures (breast augmentation, chest masculinization, facial gender-affirming surgery, vaginoplasty, metoidioplasty, phalloplasty, and many more).

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Skills Training

DBT is an evidence-based treatment effective in addressing many mental health conditions, especially in individuals who have difficulty managing strong emotions. DBT teaches us that we have four options in how we can respond to the problems life throws our way: solve the problem, change the way we feel about the problem, tolerate the problem, or do nothing. DBT Skills Training teaches concrete skills to help you understand the options you have and gain the ability to respond how you’d like. These skills are divided into four categories: mindfulness, interpersonal effectiveness, distress tolerance, and emotion regulation. DBT Skills Training is typically offered as an adjunct to individual therapy so you do not have to spend your therapy time learning skills.

Body Neutrality/Body Positivity

Many of us have challenging relationships with our bodies simply due to existing in a world where we are constantly inundated with messages about how our bodies “should” look or what our bodies “should” do. We work with individuals looking for relief from these negative messages or harsh expectations about our bodies, how they look, and how they function. Whether you’re looking to challenge fatphobia, build positive messages about your body, oppose diet culture, or reframe your self-worth, we can help you find fulfillment and discover what feels best for YOU.

Religious Trauma and Faith Transitions

The beliefs we have about ourselves, sex/intimacy, or our own sexuality are often heavily influenced by our experiences growing up. Those who were raised in strict organized religions may have internalized negative messages about themselves, their identity, or sex and intimacy in general. We can help you process and gain insight into these messages and work towards creating an affirming and deeper understanding of yourself.

Sex Therapy

While sex therapy can address multiple areas and take different forms, we specifically work with individuals who want to explore their own personal sexuality and identity or seek more fulfillment out of intimacy. This often involves exploring beliefs about sex, defining how you experience intimacy, and finding ways to create a more fulfilling sex life.
